Common manufacturing processes for custom made metal parts
The cost of a metal item will always be more than a plastic part. It might either be somewhat higher or significantly higher, depending on the procedure employed. Here are a few typical methods used to create metal components.
Sheet metal production:Fabulous when origami works - sheet metal molds are made quickly, at low cost and with short lead times. Sheet metal can replace injection-molded plastic for internal structural components because it allows greater flexibility in the early stages of the design process, when the product may still change or the forecast for the product is unclear.
CNC machining: CNC machining may be necessary if the part's form is extremely complicated. This is very expensive for relatively small parts, and the return on investment (ROI) of the die casting process is usually in the hundreds of parts.
Turning: This is typically the only technique available for surfaces on shafts and bearings. If you need sophisticated mechanical components with precise bearing surfaces, we are specialized metalworking providers who solely offer custom turned shafts.
Sand casting: Sand casting is a technique used to make bespoke metal components with intricate geometries in small batches. There is no tooling utilized; instead, a sand mold is created around a positive model of the component (usually a CNC version of the metal part). After the positive electrode is taken out and the sand mold's two halves are joined, molten metal is poured into the mold's holes to create the part's shape. The sand mold cracks when the metal hardens to release the portion once more. This procedure results in an unsatisfactory surface quality and does not preserve desirable characteristics; occasionally, post-machining is necessary to provide the necessary tolerances on crucial surfaces.
Investment Casting: Investment casting is a step up from sand casting and is used for castings with complicated geometries. Using a wax-like material, the front model or pattern of the part is created. The wax is then placed through a "investment process" to create a coating that would later serve as the mold. After the wax has been removed, a void is created, and metal is then poured into it to adopt the shape of the wax design. Post-machining is necessary to tighten tolerances on crucial surfaces since this technique also fails to maintain tight tolerances.
Die Casting: Die casting has a cheap cost per item but requires more expensive tooling and has a longer lead time (usually 5 months as opposed to 3 months for injection molding). Molds, similar to those used in injection molding, are made from hardened tool steel molds, and the part is then formed by pouring molten metal into the mold. Additionally, tightening the surface to tight tolerances is necessary for post-machining.
